The Deptford Arms
52 Deptford High Street,, Deptford, London, SE8 4RT
Dearest Friends, We’ve had a truly spiffy summer holiday roaming around the country and mucking about, but now we’re itching to get back to the Deptford Arms for some more singing, twirling, raffling, and serious good time musical fun. And we are *tres excited*, as the French might say, about some of the guests coming down to grace our Autumn season. These are already set to include Peta Webb and Ken Hall, Ed Hicks, Robin Gillian and Martin Carthy (yes, guys and gals - that’s THE Martin Carthy). Saturday 19th September, Deptford Arms, Doors 8pm, £5/£3 entry But firstly, to re-open the club in stellar fashion, we have two contrasting - yet complimentary - troubadours: the legendary Tom Paley and uniquely captivating Birdengine. By rights, Tom Paley shouldn’t be available to play the Deptford Ams in just over a weeks time. Born in 1928, Tom has been in bands with such mythical figures as Woodie Guthrie, Mike Seegar and John Cohen, travelled extensively in the true style of the troubadour, and could quite reasonably have hung up his banjo by now and be relaxing in a cabin somewhere in the Appalachian Mountains. Instead, and to our great delight, Tom has lived in England since 1965 and continuously toured alone and as part of bands such as the New Deal String Band and Mysterious Redbirds, taken up the fiddle, and still plays all over the UK - and world. It’s a rare treat to have someone so direct from the American tradition to Kit & Cutter... should be a really special one. Tom Paley: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Paley With Tom Paley we have another troubadour of a different, and yet sympathetic, kind. We saw Birdengine at Cafe Oto last year and were immediately charmed and intrigued by his strange folklore laden imagery and traditional musical tropes. A pastoral story-teller, with a shaman-esque commitment to the moods and movements of his songs, you can feel the Dorset countryside seeping through each song. Though it’s a Dorset you may not be exactly familiar with, its being populated by dead mermaids, feral children and disturbing woodland creatures... Birdengine: www.myspace.com/birdengine See you down there at the splendid and resplendent return of Kit & Cutter, with more brilliant open spots, sing-a-longs, the r-r-r-r-r-raffle and after hours dance off. Your five (or three) quid won’t buy you a better night out in Deptford. Love from K&C xx
